Turquoise Bonanza

Maybe it’s the lingering Woodstock vibes, but lately I’ve been really into oversize turquoise jewelry. There are great places to find vintage turquoise in Manhattan, but the special pieces either get snatched up or are prohibitively expensive.

This summer, however, I discovered what is literally a hidden gem at the Brooklyn Flea. Hideya Sagawa is a former buyer and visual merchandiser for What Goes Around Comes Around. While he was working there, he also amassed an amazing collection of vintage Western and Native American jewelry, clothing and accessories.

Sagawa recently teamed up with Kenji Kawasaki, the owner and designer of the Lower East Side boutique Amoskeag XX, and many of his vintage treasures will be on sale there this fall. But you can find a great selection this Saturday at the Brooklyn Flea — assuming I don’t get there first, that is!
